‘Big sister’ knows all and helps all

QIAN Reirong is hailed as the “big sister” of the Jingde Road Community. The 55-year-old director of the residence committee is a loyal friend and a warm-hearted neighbor to whom any resident can turn for help.

She is well acquainted with the 900 families in the community, remembering their names, home addresses and other personal information

“I now require each of my team members to know and be able to recite that information fluently,” the retired teacher said. That’s not easy. One of the team members, Zhang Zhenzhen, 27, failed the test the first time Qian asked her to recite the information. She was assigned to an older part of the community, where most of the residents were elderly. Zhang said she found it hard to remember the names of the people and match them with their addresses.

“I then watched how Qian worked and I found the key,” she said.

Every morning, Big Sister arrives at the office one hour early, and then walks through the neighborhoods to chat with residents. She learns who is ill, who lends money to whom, who is having problems, and who doesn’t get along with their children. Upon returning to her office, Qian notes down all the information she had gathered in her work journal.

One time, a seriously ill resident was reluctant to apply for government assistance because he thought he would suffer a “loss of face.” Qian learned about his situation from neighbors and had several quiet talks with him. Finally, he relented and she helped him fill out the application for assistance.

“Qian is like a family member among the residents,” said Chen Junying, one of Qian’s former colleagues. “Whenever anyone has difficulties, she is always the first to offer help.”

Today every member of the residence committee keeps a work journal, emulating Qian in jotting down residents’ names, ages, vocations and contact numbers.

“The secret is to listen to people and treat them with kindness,” Qian said.
