Birds thrive in hideaway forest corners

A recent ornithological survey in Songjiang found 116 birds, including seven breeds on the national protection register, the Songjiang Forestry Bureau reported.

Most of the birds live in the areas of Tianma Hill, Heng Hill, Qing Qing Forest Park and the Xinhai Aquatic Plants Center.

"The habitats are determined by the natural environment and by human activities," said Cai Feng from the forestry station. It appears bird numbers are rising. In a survey of the district's eight hills, 85 bird breeds were found. That compares with 38 breeds reported in a 1997-99 survey.

Birds tend to thrive where people don't tread heavily or at all.

Heng Hill, at an altitude of 68 meters, is not open to tourists. Its relative wilderness is popular with birds. Cai said he once found more than 5,000 egret nests on the hill. The Qing Qing Forest Park, with over one million trees, is a major transit hub for migrant birds flying over Songjiang each winter. Once, more than 800 passerines were found in the park, which was quite rare in Shanghai.
