Bus system embraces digital era advantages

SONGJIANG’S bus system is moving into the digital era with the launch of an official WeChat account, electronic bus stop signboards, digital video recorders and a bus monitoring system.
“Knowing when the next bus is due helps me budget my time,” said Songjiang native Xu Xiaoli, who checked on WeChat to see that Bus No. 17 to her home in the Zidong community would arrive in two minutes.
Currently 37 Songjiang bus lines are included on the WeChat account and on the app “Shanghai News.” More than 50 digital bus stop posts, 28 digital boards and terminal station LED screens are now operating.
The information is accessed more than 10,000 times a day.
In addition, passengers can report accidents on the WeChat account.
Songjiang is Shanghai’s first district to adopt a digital bus dispatching. A dispatch center monitors road conditions and the speed of each bus. As situations change, the center can contact drivers to adjust their driving.
By the end of this year, the system will cover Songjiang’s 121 bus lines, and another 50 digital bus stop screens will be added.
Digital video recorders installed at major bus stations and transit hubs send back real-time data.
During this year’s Tomb Sweeping Day, for example, the system picked up heavy traffic congestion at the bus hub by Metro Line 9’s Sheshan Station and dispatched five more buses to ease the problem.
At the same time, the recorders have helped police track down criminals and find missing children.
