Campaign to sort, recycle home trash moves apace
COMMUNITIES in Songjiang are participating in a garbage sorting and recycling program. Residents in Fangsong Community are now separating kitchen waste from their daily trash.
Each day, after the trash is transported to the community garbage collection center, volunteer Xiao Hu inspects it to make sure that the sorting is correct.
"At the beginning, it was really awful because many residents didn't care," Xiao said. "But now public awareness is improving and my job is much easier."
Currently, 627 families are participating in the recycling effort, with about 88 percent of them getting the separation process right.
"We'll do the sampling inspection three times a week," said Shen Huiying, the director of the community's residential committee.
In 13 neighborhoods in Yongfeng Community, 12 garbage collection centers have been renovated, with more than 1,800 trash bins installed for dry and wet garbage.
More than 24,000 household recycling bins, 76,000 rolls of plastic bags and 13,000 fridge stickers have been distributed to families in the community, and residents are required to attend weekend lectures about garbage sorting.
"From the lectures, I learned for the first time that used diapers and handkerchiefs are categorized as dry garbage," said Gao Hongmei, who lives in the Jianghong Community, "while fluorescent lamp bulbs are hazardous waste and must be disposed of carefully."
Stickers of a smiling face are affixed to the doors of residents who are recycling correctly.
