Cleaner tap water from Taipu River

Songjiang residents expect to have cleaner water from the unpolluted Taipu River, a tributary of the Huangpu River, as a drinking water project is now under way to benefit tens of thousands of homes in the district.

When a pump station channels water from the Taipu River to the eastern part of Songjiang, most Songjiang families will have access to grade-C water source, which is ideal for aquatic animals and plants.

Five underground pools will be built to store water from the Taipu River, officials said. Currently, Songjiang residents use water from the Xietang Canal in Shihudang Town, consuming about 460,000 tons a day.

Songjiang鈥檚 water project is part of the city鈥檚 effort to draw water from the upper reaches of the Huangpu River for families not only in Songjiang but also in Jinshan, Fengxian, Minhang and Qingpu districts.

A Taipu River reservoir located in Qingpu is designed with a capacity of 9.1 million cubic meters of water. A pump station can send 3.51 million cubic meters of water every day to five suburban districts in southwest Shanghai through pipelines totaling 42 kilometers in length.
