Conferences help build district as tourism hub

The 2014 edition of the Songjiang business tourism promotion handbook has been released. The manual features the 18 hotels in the district with conference facilities, adding information on newly opened hotels and conference details.

Songjiang is building a hub as a famous meeting and tourism destination. The “Conference Valley” has shown significant added value and ability to bring along other industries.

The 16 hotels included in last year’s statistics have hosted 760,000 people in a year, among them 330,000 in conference groups, making up 43 percent of the total.

There were 4,189 conference groups, including 537 from foreign companies. The average number of members per group was 79, and 197 conference groups had a business volume of over 300,000 yuan (US$48,808).

The conference and exhibition industry has become a major support of the district’s tourism development.

Tourism development firm OCT Shanghai said that with the opening of the affiliated Playa Maya Water Park, Shanghai Happy Valley had 2.85 million tourists, revenue of 390 million yuan and a profit of 60 million yuan in 2013.

In 2014, Happy Valley will focus on running the two parks, renovation of some areas, launching the construction of Roman Holiday Hotel and introducing a cultural performance project.

Xu Yinzhang, director of the district business committee, said future development is highly anticipated, building on Happy Valley’s results last year. Enriching cultural performances and following through with consumption and safety support will help make Songjiang a new front for cultural tourism.
