Countryside beautification
LOCAL artisans have decorated farmhouses and walls with peasant art. Villagers are planning trees and flowers along roads and pathways.
It is part of local participation in Shanghai’s “Beautiful Countryside” program, which is aimed at improving the environment and highlighting the culture of rural communities.
Dirty brick structures to house chickens and ducks have been replaced by cleaner bamboo cages.
Fruit trees are now providing an abundance of crops, including persimmons, oranges and loquats.
In addition, villagers have pledged to purchase only energy-saving appliances for their homes.
Among the villages, Huangqiao in Maogang Town was one of 100 villages that won awards in China’s 2014 Most Beautiful Villages competition, sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Huangqiao, which was recognized earlier last year as a “National Ecological Cultural Village,” was also one of 28 entries to win titles as “Modern New Villages.”
It was the only village in the Shanghai area to win in that category. Pandian Village in Fengxian won one of the “Historical Village” awards and Yuye Village in Jinshan won in the “Folk Customs Village” category.
