Dance put on cultural heritage list

THE Hualan Madeng Dance, a traditional local dance in Xinbang Town, has been listed as Shanghai’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Featuring flower baskets and horse lamps, the dance was invented more than 400 years ago during the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) when the general Li Zicheng led a revolt against the corrupt government.
One night his troops were ambushed, and a fierce battle ensued in which Li and his soldiers held the torches while the rode their horses, as villagers were playing the drums in support of the general
The dance was created to celebrate the battle.
Today, although many rituals have been forgotten, the dance is still being performed. Xinbang town currently has a Hualan Madeng Dance team made up of 42 voluntary dancers who perform at festivals.
Since 2010, the dance is being promoted in the town’s schools, which encouraged students to learn it and keep the heritage alive.
