District’s officials do their bit for charity

A one-day charitable fundraising activity was held by cadres of Songjiang District government agencies on the first working day of the year. Altogether 2,229 government officials across the district donated a day’s wages to help needy people.

The 2,229 cadres from district administrative office center donated a total 29,425 yuan (US$4,528) on that day. Meanwhile, 35,984 employees from 597 local enterprises and institutes across the district contributed 1.64 million yuan to the charity fund.

The activity has been held for 12 years. Last year, it raised 3.59 million yuan for local unions as charity funds. Local trade unions at all levels provided a total of 3.72 million yuan to support 7,946 migrant workers with medical care, communication expenses and educational expenses last year. Social practice activities were organized for universities students from disadvantaged families.

The district’s Federation of Trade Unions will subsidize 2,863 badly-off residents, single parents, patients suffering from serious illness, migrant workers and other needy people during the New Year’s Day Festival and the coming Spring Festival. The total amount of subsides and financial supports is estimated to reach 842,300 yuan.
