Donation drive for the needy

A district-wide donation campaign held on the first working day on the new year collected almost 700,000 yuan (US$112,350) to help migrant families and other needy households.
More than 13,000 Songjiang employers and civil servants participated in the drive, which has become an annual tradition. Donors give the equivalent of one day's salary, said Feng Ping, chairman of the Songjiang Federation of Trade Unions.
More than 150 enterprises and 20 communities also held donation drives that day.
Beginning in mid-January, Songjiang officials will distribute the money to poor and needy families, along with Spring Festival greetings. The festival marks the Lunar New Year, which begins on February 10.
