Drumming up interest in an ancient art
QUAN Junmin, a percussion master and former ballet dancer from central China's Shanxi Province, has settled in Songjiang District, where his Shanghai Percussion Troupe is trying to revive public interest in the traditional drumming art.
The troupe plays jade drums with Chinese dragon carvings, water drums, laser crystal drums, blue and white porcelain drums and diamond-shaped drums.
"Shanghai-style drumming was inspired by Jiangzhou percussion," Quan said.
The Jiangzhou drum dates back the pre-Qin period before 221 BC. It originated in Shanxi's Xinjiang County, which was known as Jiangzhou in ancient times. That's Quan's hometown.
The drums were played during sacrificial ceremonies, weddings, festivals and temple fairs.
"Traditional arts are not that appealing to many young people today, but creative performances may help change their perceptions," Quan said.
Earlier this year, it signed up with a US entertainment company to stage performances in Las Vegas.
