Fangta Park: blossoms beckon

AS the mercury rises and spring fills the air, the scenery in suburban Songjiang comes alive with greenery and blooming plants. Time to take off that heavy winter jacket and get out and about to enjoy the wonders of nature in rebirth.

March and April are the most colorful months in this ancient park. Flowers here include magnolia, jasmine, cherry and peach blossoms, orchids and begonias. The scent in the air leaves no doubt it is springtime.

The park’s celebrity flower is the white magnolia, which reaches full bloom about mid-March. The flowers are planted in profusion along the eastern and western hillsides of Fangta Tower, with others scattered throughout the bamboo forest by the Shangzhu kiosk and on the park’s northeastern flanks.

The blossoming period of the white magnolia is brief. If you miss it, purple and soulangeana magnolia, which bloom longer, are an excellent consolation prize.

In addition, the park has about 30 begonia shrubs. The most beautiful two are growing in front of the conference hall. Pink at first, the flowers turn as red as fire when they are in full bloom.

A few steps away are two pink-white begonia trees. In the early stage of bloom, the petals are snow white and then they gradually become a light pink.
