SONGJIANG is prepared for the annual summer flood season. The district’s flood control office has just finished a thorough check of its 26 pumping stations. It has installed five new hand pumps with flow rates of 150 cubic meters of water per hour, and is purchasing a large emergency pump car to handle up to 800 cubic meters per hour. The district has assigned 120 workers to streets where flooding is most common. They are responsible for 320 kilometers of rainwater pipes. When it rains, the workers keep measurements on the amount of precipitation and clear away debris from gutters and manhole covers that might impede water runoff.
