Goat Meat Festival
The annual Goat Meat Festival is on this month in Zhangze Village. It’s a taste treat.
For centuries, the village has traditionally eaten goat meat in the heat of summer. The meat is said to strengthen “inner yang energy” and ward off the adversities of the coming cold months.
On Zhangze Old Street, visitors can find takeaway meals of goat soup and goat noodles. For more elaborate dining, restaurants in the village offer full meals that include steamed goat, leg of goat, spicy goat and goat offal. A steaming hot goat soup is served with warmed rice wine.
According to old rural recipes, goat meat is marinated in rice wine or other local alcohol before it goes into traditional stir-fry and braised dishes. Hot chili is the traditional condiment.
The most popular local delicacies are steamed sliced goat meat, red braised goat meat and minced goat meat. For true aficionados, there is a hot pot that includes goat blood, liver, spine and tripe. Local farmers still cook in the traditional method of using a steamboat in a wooden vat on a clay oven.
Goat meat is good the year-around. According to traditional Chinese medicine, it builds up “yang energy” in winter, easing poor circulation, some heart problems and menstrual irregularities. Eating goat can also help expel body toxins, especially when the meat is consumed with a distilled liquor such as baijiu.
Visitors to the village can also buy freshly picked fruits and vegetables. Among the more famous local specialties are rice, eggs, glutinous rice, beans and dried tofu. In addition, homemade salted pork and chicken and the popular Yexie Town cakes are available.
