Green energy vehicles highlight focus on eco-friendly environment

SONGJIANG No. 24, the district's first bus line to run all-electric vehicles, went into full operation this month.

The charging station in the terminal on Ronghui Road can recharge 10 eco-buses. It takes six hours to recharge each bus. By the end of this year, the number of 680-volt charging piles at the station will triple, according to Xing Yaxian, director of the local power plant.

These new eco-buses use three languages - Shanghai dialect, Mandarin and English to announce stops.

The whole bus line is a total of 20.55 kilometers. Each bus runs about 240 kilometers every day, at intervals of about 24-30 minutes.

About 11.5 meters long, the new bus can carry 56 passengers. Externally, it resembles a traditional bus, but the interior is different. The seats in the front compartment face inward, making the space roomier.

In addition, 10 buses powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) will enter service soon.

These green buses complement other eco-friendly transport and wider initiatives in Songjiang.

Industrial chain

An integrated industrial chain focused on the development of new energy automobiles has been taking shape in the district in recent years.

Songjiang is already an important car manufacturing center in Shanghai, the development of the industry influenced by the government's campaign to promote the production and use of green vehicles in China.

It is estimated that Songjiang's new energy car center will reach an annual output value of 20 billion yuan (US$3.21 billion) by the end of 2015.

These initiatives are all part of the district's efforts to create a greener environment.

Under this strategy, a crackdown on industrial pollution will begin later this year. Some small steel mills, textile factories and printing plants will be closed.

At the same time, an LNG project is starting in rural villages in the towns of Jiuting, Xinqiao and Zhongshan, and factories will be required to install rooftop solar power systems.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the modern Songshen sewage treatment plant is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
