Greener vehicles drive industry plans

AN integrated industrial chain focused on the development of new energy automobiles is taking shape in Songjiang.

Enhancing progress on the project, the Songjiang Bus Co. and the Shanghai Guoxuan New Energy Co Ltd signed an agreement that will land the district its first electricity-powered bus line.

Guoxuan, China's largest power-battery producer, based in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province, plans a 9.3-hectare factory in a Songjiang industrial park.

Earlier, Saite Kang, a manufacturer of electrolytic capacitors, power converters and charging piles for electric vehicles, has announced it will relocate its China headquarters to the district.

Songjiang is already an important car-manufacturing center in Shanghai, and development of the industry is influenced by the government's campaign to promote production and use of green vehicles in China.

It is estimated that Songjiang's new energy car center will reach an annual output value of 20 billion yuan (US$3.21 billion) by the end of 2015.

Guoxuan's third-generation electric car battery, after being fully charged for about six hours, can power a car to run for 150 kilometers. Tests show that an electric car can save up to 90 percent of the cost of a conventional combustion-engine auto.

A fourth-generation battery near completion will increase electrolytic capacity by up to 40 percent. According to the company's plan, Guoxuan will manufacture 31,500 sets of batteries a year.

At the same time, manufacturers of combustion engine cars in Songjiang, such as BYD and Shanghai Wanxiang Automobile Co Ltd, have also announced plans to expand in the new energy field.

BYD purchased a bus factory in the district to pursue a new electric bus project, and Wanxiang Automobile is developing a new bus designed with a system of both batteries and electrolytic capacitors, controlled by a digital processing chip.
