Gym or track, today鈥檚 focus is on fitness
A yuan a day keeps the doctor away. At least that’s the thinking of Songjiang District officials as they plan a series of low-admission gyms to encourage more people to get exercise, improve their fitness and benefit their health.
Songjiang’s first public nonprofit gym is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Located on Rongle Road downtown, the gym faces north with ceiling-high glass windows. The 260-square-meter gym will have 10 treadmills, muscle-building machines, two showers and two locker rooms.
The facility is expected to open to the public in January.
In addition, nonprofit gyms in the towns of Maogang and Chedun towns are in the design phase and are scheduled to open later next year.
Songjiang’s health kick includes enhancing sports facilities.
The athletic track in Central Park has been expanded. The original track, built in 2011, has been a popular place for morning and evening joggers but was too limited to handle increasing numbers of runners.
The new two-lane track is 2.4 meters wide and 460 meters long. It connects with the old track via two arcs in the south. Both the tracks have been freshly repainted, with streetlamps installed for early morning and late evening use.
Two more running tracks are being built in Shihudang Town. One of the tracks, located at a former dumpsite on the eastern end of Songzheng Road, will benefit more than 2,000 nearby residents. It is 2.4 meters wide and about 600 meters long. When completed next month, it will be longest in any of the district’s 11 towns, excluding the downtown area.
A 600-square-meter site for public dancing and other cultural events will be built at the northeast end of the track.
Another athletic track is under construction in Tahui Citizens’ Square. It is 1.2 meters wide and 300 meters long. Existing basketball hoops in the square will be upgraded. This track is expected to open to the public later this month.
