Happy Birthday, Songjiang

TO celebrate the 1,260th anniversary of the founding of Songjiang County, a long scroll of painting and calligraphy displays the essence of Songjiang's history and culture.

The scroll, now on public displays, combines around 30 important scenic attractions of Songjiang in the forms of calligraphy, Chinese painting, seal cutting and poetry. It takes the Huangpu River as the origin and travels to attractions such as Pujiang Yanzhu, the No. 1 Bridge of Yunjian and the Songjiang Southern Station of Shanghai-Hangzhou high speed railway.

Generally considered to be the cradle of Shanghai's history and culture, Songjiang became a county known as Huating County in AD 751 during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), and in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) it was promoted to prefecture and got its current name, Songjiang. It was upgraded to district in 1998.

By Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, Songjiang had become the center of the country's textile industry.

Songjiang has nurtured a number of important figures, such as the famous brother writers Lu Ji and Lu Yun in the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 265-316) and the young hero Xia Wanchun in the Qing Dynasty.

Historical attractions are everywhere, such as Tangjing Tower, the oldest building in Shanghai; Fangta Pagoda, Zuibai Pool, Shanghai Observatory and Sheshan Catholic Cathedral that was considered the major Catholic church in East Asia.

Although industries and infrastructure were destroyed during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), the people of Songjiang revitalized their economy and culture since 1949.

Today the Sheshan National Tourist Resort is the only holiday resort rated at the national level in Shanghai, and Songjiang University Town has become a symbol of Shanghai's higher education.
