Housekeeping course turns out its first graduates

THE first graduation class in a domestic service education course recently completed two-and-a-half years of study at the Songjiang branch of Shanghai Open University.
The 52 students, ranging in age from 22 to 61, have been attending courses such as cleaning, cooking, child and elderly care, and etiquette to prepare them for work as household help.
The courses stress practicality. Many of the graduates were already working in domestic service when they decided to take the course and improve their skills.
The oldest student, Zhang Wenfang, has operated a domestic service company in Songjiang for eight years.
“Studying was difficult for someone my age,” the 61 year-old told Shanghai Daily. “But as a boss, I have to learn new things keep abreast of changes.”
Many of the people she employs are poorly educated and lack basic skills. The youngest student, Gu Jiahui, is one of five men in the course. “I’ve learned a lot and it’s good to have certification when looking for a job,” he said.
The Songjiang Women’s Federation granted subsidies for the course to 26 students from poor families, including 16 migrants.
“The market is in sore need of well-trained domestic service professionals,” said Zhou Ming, president of the district branch of Shanghai Open University.
“We plan to promote this education model to other districts of Shanghai.”
