Housing within reach of low-income

Songjiang is forging ahead with plans to build affordable housing for low-income people.

By the end of this year, construction will be completed on 6,578 public rental units and 6,500 flats for families relocated by urban renewal projects.

In addition, about 600 old apartments will undergo renovation.

According to the local housing management bureau, more than 6,600 affordable flats were built last year, with 5,834 relocation apartments under construction — totaling about 1.3 million square meters of housing. A public rental housing project started last year will accommodate more than 2,000 families.

About 100 households have signed contracts to move into affordable flats with property rights, and 462 families have received 6.8 million yuan (US$1.12 million) in subsidies from the government for the low-rent apartments.

Yang Hong, 50, who is deaf and lives in Sijing Town, finally was able to buy a 74-square-meter apartment at a below-market price in January. He had been living in a 20-square-meter apartment with his wife and son.

“We’re looking forward to decorating our new flat,” Yang said in sign language. “We are so happy to have a bigger home.”

Yongfeng Community will launch its biggest-ever demolition project this year, razing the homes of 1,800 families and bulldozing 66,000 square meters of illegal buildings, dumps and markets.

The demolition site will be turned into a high-speed railway station, a middle school and a public greenbelt along Rongle Road W.

More than 200 illegal buildings, including 72 waste-collection stations, 21 dumps and 17 cheap, group-rent houses are scheduled to be demolished by June.
