Industry waste spins profit for recycling firm

SONGJIANG is forging ahead with plans to become a Yangtze River Delta center for recycling industrial materials.

In 2011, the Shanghai Manufacturing Recycling Trade Center was opened to provide services for more than 550 companies comprising about 85 percent of Shanghai’s reprocessing trade in metals, plastic, rubber, wooden ware and paper.

It provides businesses with a site to dispose of industrial off-cuts, providing an umbrella for the city’s more than 1,000 recycling companies.

In the past three years, the center had trading volume of 1.2 billion yuan (US$196 million).

Shanghai Yikang Co is a manufacturer of sportswear. Leftover neoprene from its manufacture of diving suits was once regarded as waste.

However, with the help of the center, that material found new value. The neoprene is now recycled to produce toys that add to Yikang’s profit.

In another example, Shanghai Suershou Engineering Manufacture Co is now selling leftover steel plates to a metal-stamping parts producer.

The center also assisted Shanghai Baoyan Industrial Tech Co in separating its waste plastic film into various categories that allowed the company to receive a higher price for the film.

The center currently is constructing a price index platform to display online recycling prices every day. The information will be released free of charge on its official website and to clients’ mobile phones.

In addition, the centers help companies devise the best means of bundling up waste packing materials. To avoid business corruption, the center also provides a verification service for recycled material.

“The center has opened a new business channel for us,” said an executive at Shanghai Kaihong Electrics Co. “It offers reasonable prices and, what’s more important, the whole trading process is transparent, which reassures us.”
