It’s all here, in one sprawling campus

University town, located in the northwest of Songjiang New City, is an ivory tower without walls.

It is home to the Shanghai International Studies University, the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, the Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce, Donghua University, the Shanghai University of Engineering Science, East China University of Political Science and Law, and the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art.

Aside from its serious academic pursuits, the town is also a hub of entertainment, tourism, dining, young start-up companies and high-tech innovation. Most university resources are open to the public.

No walls divide the seven universities on this sprawling campus. Instead, they are interlaced with greenbelts and waterways. Libraries, gyms, swimming pools, playgrounds, labs, computer rooms and other facilities are shared among the resident universities.

The town boasts a highly intelligent digital framework with WiFi signals. Students from different universities in different places can “attend” one class at the same time.

University town capped dramatic development in northwestern Songjiang, which was once a bit of a backwater in the district.

Six local bus lines connect students, staff and other residents to the district’s center, while five inter-district bus lines link with the nearby Minhang District, where even more public transit choices are available.

The extension of Metro Line 9 also connects University Town with the Shanghai downtown commercial and retail center of Xujiahui. In addition, two shuttle bus lines run among the universities and dorm areas every day.

Students need food for sustenance as well as food for thought. To feed those healthy student appetites, dining facilities have become something of a “pillar industry” in the town.

With one campus card, students can dine at the canteens and cafeterias of the seven universities.

Off-campus restaurants are mushrooming, offering everything from fried noodles and Japanese sushi, to Hong Kong dim sum and Korean barbecue. There are also places serving American-style burgers and Sichuan hotpot.

Many restaurants are located along Wenhui Road, the main street that links the seven universities. On its eastern end, there are two large food plazas just near the dorm area; on the western end, fast-food chains, cafes and bakeries dominate.

For students who need to stay indoors and hit the books, takeaway meals can be ordered via smartphone apps or through the Internet. Be careful to ensure that restaurants chosen meet health safety standards.

Fashion also reigns in University Town. Numerous clothing shops, shoe stores, accessories booths and bag shops are everywhere, attracting young people with cheaper prices and fashion design.

Some shopping malls have also opened branches near the universities, including Tesco, Kaiyuan Mediterranean and Songjiang Outlet.

With so much going on, it’s small wonder that University Town has become something of a tourism attraction.

Day-trippers can be seen marveling at the Thai Golden Roof and the European architecture at the Shanghai International Studies University, or lying on the grassy commons area of Donghua University.

The bold, bizarre sculptures at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art also attract many visitors.
