Laboratory of college to improve animal experimentation stock
THE Animal Lab of Shanghai Vocational College of Agricultural and Forestry in Songjiang has recently gone into full operation.
"Some 70 percent of Shanghai's frontline technicians engaged in animal management come from our school," said Zhang Jiang, the new lab's founder. "The set-up of our lab will greatly enhance the education of students. Lab rats will be used for scientific research and student training."
The lab, built to international standards, will be the first in Shanghai to conduct research on the possibilities of scale breeding of lab animals.
"The need for quality rats is always a big headache for Chinese scientific institutions and enterprises," Zhang said. "Today, many of them are still importing lab rats from abroad."
The new lab is home to 10,000 rodents. Room temperature, humidity, ventilation and sunlight must be carefully monitored, and water and food supplies carefully controlled, Zhang said. The rats need an absolutely sterile environment.
"Only in this way, can we get the most accurate test results from experiments," he added.
Animal experimentation is always a contentious issue. Public concern about animal rights has reached even China.
"We do everything possible to reduce their pain and improve their living conditions," Zhang said.
Each student is required to attend special sessions on lab animal euthanasia.
