Latchkey kids find a haven
All public primary schools in Songjiang will offer afterschool care free of charge for parents who cannot pick up their children when classes are over, the district Education Bureau has announced.
The so-called “latchkey services” — named because they are focused on children who would otherwise go home unsupervised, with the house keys in their pockets — will be available until 5pm on school days. The time may be extended in exceptional cases, but the care can’t run too late into the evening because it doesn’t include meals.
Latchkey students will be free to finish homework, play games and read, but the time can’t be used for tutorial classes, the bureau said.
“I’m all for it,” said Yan Peifang, mother of a third-grader and an employee of an overseas company. “We are extremely busy and would otherwise have to hire an ayi to pick up our son after school. I hope the program will be implemented as soon as possible.”
