Lights! Action! Lantern festival set to kick off
The traditional lantern show is returning to Songjiang after an absence of 15 years.
The Fangta Park International Lanterns Festival will be held from January 24 to February 17 and will feature the biggest display of lanterns in the festival’s history.
More than 40 sets of large lanterns made by craftsmen from the city of Zigong in Sichuan Province will turn the 10,000-square-meter lawn of the park into a dreamy world of lights and magic.
“This show will feature elements of Songjiang culture, Chinese Spring Festival and the district’s historic scenery, using modern lighting and audio techniques,” said Zhai Rongjun, the park’s deputy director.
In addition to the lantern festival, the park will host a food gala featuring, among other delights, an Arabian barbeque, old Beijing pear syrup and the famed deep-fried stinky tofu from Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province.
Folk arts will be on display during the festival. Visitors will be treated to live shadow plays, exhibits of Chinese calligraphy, face painting, riddle guessing and displays of dough figurines.
On January 28 and 29, from 10-11am and from 1-4pm, local calligraphers will write free Spring Festival couplets for residents in the central Fangta Square.
On New Year’s Eve, Tianfei Palace will be open at midnight for visitors to gong the bell, beat the drum and light the lotus lantern to pray for a happy New Year. On the day, free dumplings will be served.
On February 2, 9 and 10, Cheng Duoduo, son of the late painter and calligrapher Cheng Shifa, will be on site to appraise art works collected by citizens.
The park can accommodate up to 10,000 visitors at a time. To maintain order, 80 security guards will patrol the park each night during the festival.
