Lofty tradition to greet new year
SHESHAN Hill National Forest Park in the Songjiang District has been included in a list of China's most significant parks by the State Forestry Bureau, the only parkland in Shanghai to win the designation.
The park covers more than 400 hectares and features a range of small hills that runs for 13 kilometers from the southwest to the northeast.
More than 81 percent of the parkland is covered by forest and about 1,000 different types of vegetation.
The park contains 12 scenic gardens, a wilderness preserve, a Chinese traditional medical herb garden as well s a subtropical botanical garden.
Last year a 20,000-meter fire barrier, fire-separation roads and 20 mountain reservoirs were set up to handle any fire emergencies.
The park has become a popular destination for Shanghai day-trippers. On January 1, urban dwellers climbed Sheshan Hill to celebrate New Year's Day.
In early spring, the park will host a bamboo shoots festival that always attracts gourmets from the city center. In summer, the park becomes a cool refuge from inner city heat.
Sheshan National Forest Park receives 1.6 million visitors each year and serves as a seasonal camp for more than 200,000 school students.
