Looking down at urban development
URBAN development in Songjiang is proceeding below ground as well as above. A 25-kilometer, multi-functional tunnel costing 3.5 billion yuan (US$504 million) will begin construction this year, with the first phase of 7.4 kilometers to go into full operation in 2018.
It will act as a conduit for electricity, telecommunications, water and gas, and it will allow easy repairs on any of the systems should fault occur.
The tunnel will be equipped with systems of ventilation, fire control, power, drainage and alarms.
The pipes and lines will meet high standards, such as seamless steel gas pipes.
In 2015, Songjiang’s southern area was designated as a pilot zone to build a “sponge city” that will function as an environmentally friendly alternative to water storage and drainage. The new tunnel is part of that project.
The first phase of the tunnel runs over three streets.
The Yuyang Road portion will have a rainwater collector that can retain and send early-stage rainwater and other sewage to a sewage treatment plant.
In the stormy weather, the collector can mitigate the threat of flooding.
The tunnel’s second phase, more than 6.6 kilometers, is scheduled to begin construction earlier next year.
