Xinbang Town in southwestern Songjiang is laid out like a giant lotus leaf. For 1,500 years, it has enjoyed fame as the 鈥渉ome of the lotus,鈥 with a water area of almost four square kilometers.
This year鈥檚 festival will run through August 10.
Flower breeding has produced some 150 cultivars, making it China鈥檚 second-largest lotus center and the biggest one in East China.
At the Lotus Commune, day-trippers can enjoy the burst of flowers upon the large green patches of lotus leaves that almost cover the water surface. They can also can try their luck angling for pond crayfish. At riverside kiosks, visitors can sample the fragrant tea made from lotus.
The Yayuan Resort is offering special menus incorporating elements of the lotus. The dishes feature seasonal organic vegetables and fresh water fish and shrimp.
One place worthy of a visit is Fishing Fun Wharf, which offers local delicacies such as wonton, rice cakes, egg dumplings and tofu skin rolls with minced pork.
For those who like the fun of group barbecues, there are facilities provided at the wharf. Customers are allowed to bring their own food this year. Barbeque tools and 鈥渆co-coal鈥 are available for hire.
Xuelanghu Resort, famous for its hot springs in winter, gets into the lotus mode in summer. It has a menu highlighting lotus dishes. From July 19-25, the resort will host a beer and barbeque festival. On July 26, a fashion show of wedding gowns will be held against a backdrop of lotus ponds.
On the nights of August 1 and 2, there will be a lotus lantern event, when people can light a lantern and put it to float in the river, making a wish as it drifts away.
