Made-in-Songjiang becomes an emblem of quality for food-processing exports

MADE-IN-SONGJIANG food exports in the first quarter earned revenue of more than 400 million yuan (US$64.5 million), accounting for a fifth of export income in Shanghai.

The district said its export food inspection program last year deemed all exports to be 100 percent safe.

Earlier this year, Songjiang Governor Yu Taiwei proposed a strengthening of the food industry, putting forward the idea of a “food industrial cluster.”

That followed last December’s creation in Songjiang of China’ first food safety model zone for processing and packaging exports.

At the same time, the district’s 13 largest food factories were designated as model enterprises, including brands such as Vitasoy milk, Wrigley chewing gum, Nescafe and Meiji chocolate.

A management system in the zone monitors ingredients and additives used in food processing to ensure they meet regulations.

Inspection is one side of the food export success story; the other is good government support.

Take the case of Wrigley Confectionary Shanghai. The local arm of the Chicago-based company needed to speed up order transfers and shorten the time going through customs. The Songjiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau held talks with the company and offered a tailor-made documentation procedure that cut processing time by a third.

Nescafe Shanghai and other companies have benefited from the Green Channel that shortens procedures involving business operations from 20 days to only one week.

“This channel greatly reduces the inventory cycle and food material storage time for us,” said a spokesman at Vitasoy.

Food information online

The Songjiang Food Safety Office recently launched an e-map of food-related enterprises.

People using the service can get information on a restaurant’s or food company’s business license, food quality evaluation and grading. Access is through the official website http://spaq.songjiang.gov.cn or by scanning the QR code through a smart phone and typing the name and address of a restaurant or food factory.

The e-map is dotted with pink balloons, identifying all licensed food factories, restaurants, caterers and farms and contains information about their processing, logistics and import and export trade.
