Mums the word at floral display

SONGJIANG’S first chrysanthemum flower festival is in its full swing at the Honghua Garden in the Wushe Agricultural and Tourism Center. It will run through November 23.
As trees lose their leaves and shadows grow longer, the colorful blossoms of chrysanthemums brighten late autumn. In Chinese culture, the flower as an emblem of integrity, nobility and longevity, especially when paired with pine trees.
Chrysanthemum cultivation dates back more than 3,000 years in China. It was the flower of royalty, artists and scholars in ancient times.
Honghua Garden, in Songjiang’s Punan area on the south of the Huangpu River, is a sea of color, with more than 1,000 chrysanthemums in full bloom in the 60,000-square-meter exhibition hall.
The garden’s main entrance is festooned with large beds of calliopsis. Venturing further in, tourists will marvel at the seven-color chrysanthemum species co-developed by horticulturists from China and Japan.
In addition, chrysanthemums decorate landscaped bonsai, shaped like rockeries, corals and cascading waterfalls.
