New park looks at history in a modern format

GUANGFULIN Relics Park, which pays tribute to Shanghai’s ancient ancestors, will be partially opened to the public later this summer. One of its main features will be a music fountain in the central square, equipped with flashing LED lights.
Many shops are now setting up in the park and some have opened, including coffee bars, goat meat restaurants and teahouses.
The heritage park is still under construction and is not officially open, but that doesn’t stop local residents from stopping by for a peek. The park’s management committee reminds visitors to take care because of construction materials at the site.
Once the park is fully opened, admission to the music fountain will be free during holidays and festivals. There will be fountain shows at the northern side of Guangfulin and Longyuan roads.
Guangfulin Relics Park honors ancestors who lived in the area about 4,000 years ago. In 1958, local farmers dredging a waterway found some ancient pottery shards. In 1961, archaeologists began the first systematic excavation work at the site. They discovered a large volume of pottery vases, spinning wheels, cooking vessels and dishes.
The park, located on Guangfulin Road, is comprised of two underground layers. The first covers about 10,000 square meters; the second, about 7,000 square meters. The greater park area has two tombs. One contains the complete skeleton of a pig, while the other holds the bone remains of a dog.
Archeologists also unearthed sharpened stone weapons and tools used as axes, knives, chisels and shovels.
The excavation work stretched from 1961 to 2008. In 2008, experts found a large number of bronze shards, wooden craft items and turtle shells, which in ancient China were used to foretell the future.
