ANCIENT towns
Sijingijingijingijingijing Town was recently listed as one of China’s top 10 media-focused ancient towns. The other nine included towns in Zhejiang, Guizhou, Shandong, Ningxia, Henan, Sichuan and Jiangsu provinces. Sijing has a history of more than 1,000 years, and its heritage is being protected under a town preservation project.
Call of nature
Threeee public restrooms in Songjiang have won awards for their design and cleanliness. Of the district’s 212 public toilets, 198 have been designated as “clean.” They come equipped with toilet paper, hand dryers and soap. Some even have bookshelves, chairs and tables, and flowerpots. Last year 73 public toilets in Songjiang’s rural villages were renovated at a cost of almost 8 billion yuan (US$1.3 million). In downtown areas of the district, 1,700 maps have been posted indicating the nearest public lavatories.
