Ode has 1,260 characters for 1,260 years
THE "Ode to Songjiang" that won top honors was written by a newspaper editor and poet who moved from Sichuan Province 10 years ago and now lives in Jinshan District. He was the only one among 15 finalists who lives in Shanghai.
Zhang Qingyun, who won the award, wrote a poem of 1,260 characters to celebrate the 1,260th anniversary of the founding of Songjiang Town.
In total, 159 entries from 22 provinces and cities were submitted. The judges of the finalists included famous scholars and cultural figures such as Chen Pengju, Ding Ximan and Chen Yunji.
Fifteen prizes were handed out on September 16 at the opening ceremony of the 2011 Songjiang Cultural Tourism and Shopping Festival.
Zhang, 38, who lives in Fengjiang Town, Jinshan District, is the editor of a local newspaper. He is a member of the Chinese Poetry Association.
Zhang said he entered the competition because a good friend told him about the beauty and history of Songjiang Town, founded in the Tang Dynasty.
Although Zhang is an experienced poet, the task was difficult since the ode had to be written in Fu, an ancient poetic form of Chinese literature that dates back 3,000 years.
The "Ode to Songjiang" contains seven stanzas.
