Onward and upward in the New Year

MANY people look ahead in the New Year, but for 5,000 people, it was a matter of looking up. They climbed Sheshan Hill to mark the first day of 2017 in what has become an annual tradition.
The climbers, aged between eight and 65 and dressed in red, set off from the Happy Valley amusement park at dawn, walking or jogging 2.2 kilometers to the eastern gate at the foot of the Sheshan Hill.
Two climbing options were available. Climbers could go straight up the 368 steps to the watchtower at the top. Alternatively, the less hardy could meander their way through woods halfway up the hill to enjoy some fresh air.
Boards were set up atop the southern peak of the hill so that those who made it all the way up could write down and post wishes for a safe, happy New Year. Many also posted photos.
On the eastern peak, hundreds of red ribbons were tied to tree branches to evoke blessings.
Since 2007, the New Year climbing event has attracted an increasing number of participants — both from Shanghai and other parts of the country.
When online registration began last month, the 5,000 available slots were grabbed in 30 minutes, half the time of a year earlier.
“It was my fifth year participating in the event,” said Songjiang local Liu Juntao, 33. “When you reach the top, after a test of stamina and willpower, you feel strong enough to overcome any difficulties that may arise in the coming year.”
Elsewhere in the district, more than 600 people bicycled around Songjiang to welcome the New Year in an eco-friendly way.
Unlike previous years, the cycling event wasn’t set up as a competition. Every participant was winner. After finishing the 81-kilometer course, each cyclist was awarded a certificate of honor.
“Everyone in my family is a huge fan of bike riding, and we have cycled around the Yangtze River Delta together,” said Chu Chunrong, who set off at 5am from home in the Minhang District to participate in the event with her two children. “My New Year wish is for my kids to be healthy and happy.”
