Park-and-Ride grows in popularity
USE of the Park-and-Ride Center in Songjiang University Town has increased to 50 percent from less than 20 percent as the public comes to appreciate reduced traffic congestion around the local Metro station.
The center has become a popular way for Songjiang locals to travel to downtown centers.
Park-and-Ride facilities include car parks and provide connections with public transport, allowing commuters and other rail travelers headed to city centers to leave their vehicles and transfer to a bus or rail system. Vehicles are retrieved by owners when they return to Songjiang.
Songjiang University Town’s Park-and-Ride comprises 331 parking spaces. It is one of the city’s first group of six “incentive parking” facilities and is open from 5:30am to 11:30pm every day.
Green commuting
Commuters benefit from discounts with their subway journey tickets and the Shanghai transport card. Compared with downtown Park-and-Rides that charge six yuan an hour, Songjiang program charges only five yuan a time.
The usage rate was initially low because of a lack of promotion that left few locals with knowledge about the facility.
The local transport department this year started a Park-and-Ride promotion campaign among Songjiang motorists.
It set up signboards with parking information along main streets and worked with communities to distribute leaflets about the program in neighborhoods.
The local traffic department says it wants to encourage greener commuting by shifting travelers to a Park-and-Ride system providing convenient transport.
