Portraits Of Historical Celebrities
PORTRAITS of historically outstanding people in Songjiang are on display in the district. They were painted by Xu Zhang, a director of old Songjiang Prefecture, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Xu painted more than 100 scholars, poets, officials, martyrs and hermits in the old prefecture (Huating, Shanghai and Qingpu counties), all finished about 270 years ago. As the student of portrait master Zeng Jing, Xu was a leading painter of the “Bocheng School” in the Qing Dynasty and the portraits of Songjiang talents were regarded as his magnum opus. This exhibition, supported by the Beijing Palace Museum, Minhang Archives and Songjiang collector Zhu Detian, is the first time to be held since 1949.
