Poverty鈥檚 children visit 鈥榦utside world鈥
TWENTY-TWO minority children from Qinghai Province were treated to a trip to Songjiang to celebrate Children’s Day with local kids, according to the district government.
This trip, from May 31 to June 2, was funded by a local education organization as its first summer camp for children living in poor, mountainous remote regions of China. For the children, it was their first trip to the “outside world.”
They were entertained by music, movies, books, dances and special meals during the visit. They toured the Songjiang Science and Technology Museum, the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, the Songjiang Gallery and the Shanghai Chenshan Botanic Garden to learn science, modern art and the Shanghai environment.
One of the children gaped in awe at the lake in Songjiang University Town, saying he had never seen so much water in his life. His hometown is located in parched mountains.
Qiao Xiaode, a 12-year-old Tu minority child, became the “brother” of 9-year-old local resident Wang Yun. Qiao stayed with Wang’s family during the visit. The lad said the experience was very heartwarming because his parents have to work long, hard hours outside the home and there is precious little time for family get-togethers.
On their last day together, Qiao gave Wang two pairs of handmade insoles made by his mother, and Wang gave his new “brother” a model of a destroyer ship. “His dream is to become a soldier, and I hope it will come true,” said Wang.
