Reaching for the stars, pondering the unknown
HUMANS never stop marveling at the vast, mysterious universe that surrounds us. We gaze at a starry night sky and can’t help but contemplate the meaning of life.
But urban skies are often poor vantage points. So the Shanghai Astronomical Museum, located in Sheshan Hill Forest Park, has mounted a photography exhibition to bring the clarity of the universe within easier grasp. Some 40 captivating starry nights are depicted by the camera lens.
Photographers chased the stars in remote mountains, deserts, grasslands and islands in China, Japan, Bolivia and South Africa.
“It’s almost impossible for today’s urban dwellers to see a starry night because people are always in a hurry and the city sky is polluted,” said Tang Haiming, director of the science education department at the Shanghai Observatory Songjiang Station. “We hope this exhibition will allow them to see the beauty of the universe in all its glory.”
