Relive old Shanghai by touring Chedun film park
Shanghai Film Park in Chedun Town, Songjiang District, is becoming a new tourist destination with a host of film sets and entertainment facilities.
The southern part of the park, opened two months ago, has a tourist service center and a car park with 1,000 spaces. It is modeled on old Shanghai in the 1920s and 鈥30s, featuring old landmarks, the famous Wing On Department Store on Nanjing Road, churches, theaters, cafes and even a prison.
A French mansion, about 1,100 square meters in floor space, is now open to visitors. It was the site for shooting 鈥淩ouge,鈥 a TV drama about a girl from a rich family falling in love with a poor young man in the 1930s. The two-story house looks imposing with a porch, white pillars, a sweeping staircase, ornate sculptures and crystal chandeliers.
Traveling in a time machine
Riding an old-fashioned tram car in the park is like traveling in a time machine into the past as old Shanghai streets glide past the tram windows. All the replica buildings were built for film and TV crews and for tourists as well.
A new addition in the park is a 300-square-meter prison house, which is scheduled to open this month. The prison and a replica Waibaidu Bridge will remind people of Shanghai鈥檚 colonial past.
鈥淪hanghai Film Park is the first choice for film and television crews when they shoot scenes set in the war against the Japanese invaders and for spy movies,鈥 said Wang Shiqin, the park鈥檚 marketing director. 鈥淭o meet the needs of film crews and tourists, we will continue to expand the park but stick to the 鈥極ld Shanghai鈥 theme.鈥
Wang said the park also tries to be a business incubator for arts and creative start-ups.
The park-run Shanghai Sanling Arts and Cultural Zone has attracted more than 1,000 start-up firms.
Beijing Wanying Film and TV Co Ltd is a newcomer in the zone. 鈥淲e visited many creative parks in China before deciding to move here. We are drawn by Sanling鈥檚 remote service platform, which is really convenient,鈥 said a company executive.
Sanling鈥檚 general manager Chen Airong said proudly: 鈥淲e have created an online platform for companies to get information about the zone, policy explanations and other news updates.鈥
Shanghai Film Park is also a popular venue for exhibitions and concerts. The 2015 Exhibition of Shanghai Young Artists and the 鈥淥ld Shanghai鈥 Jazz Festival were held here.
Sanling Art Salon is a place where artists meet and exchange ideas and views.
The artists also gave something back to the film park.
In 2014, 30 art students from East China Normal University spent two months creating shop signs and billboards that smacked of old Shanghai.
鈥淲e are not content with being just a filming site. We want to be a place where people can relive the past and learn culture and history from everything we built here,鈥 Chen said.
