Rubbish recycling gets a boost

A trash collection, sorting and recycling campaign is underway in Songjiang.

The project has taken aim at plastic bags, used yogurt containers and fruit peels, with a special focus on Songdong Road, a street of eateries.

Public talks on how to sort trash have been given to waiters and chefs on the street, and bins for sorted garbage have been distributed. After the first week, the daily trash pick-up there has been reduced to two tons from four.

Earlier this year, a trash recycling company called Jimao was established. It has since expanded to 60 communities in Songjiang, recycling almost four tons of waste every day.

After morning trash collection every day, the refuse is sorted into four categories: Tetra Pak containers, drinks bottles, used yogurt containers and disposable hard plastics.

Jimao pays 0.26 yuan (4 US cents) for every kilogram of recycled material it buys and receives 0.36 yuan for every kilo it sells.

“Frankly, given transport fees and labor costs, we don’t make much money,” said the company’s director.
