Rural fare for holiday diners

WITH Spring Festival just around the corner, Songjiang locals are busy booking restaurant tables for the traditional family get-togethers that mark the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Every year more people seem to be shifting their New Year's Eve dinners, or nianyefan, from big hotels to family-style bistros in nearby rural villages.

"About 80 percent of our tables for New Year's Eve have been booked," said Wu Zhonghuan, who runs a restaurant of village delicacies in Xinbang Town. "Compared with last year, this new trend surprises us."

Perhaps many urban dwellers prefer the tranquility of rural settings, with chickens and ducks waddling around yards and cured meat hanging from roofs.

The rural scenes lend a more authentic atmosphere of yesteryear, when festivals took on a special significance in rural China.

The New Year, which starts on February 10, will feature an array of rural festivities themed around farm events.

The Fishing Dock in Xinbang Town will host a fishing contest for visitors to try their luck. There will also be contests to catch free-range chickens and ducks and pick vegetables. Anything caught or picked will be freshly cooked and brought to the table.

In the Punan area, the Snow Wave Resort has opened a 10,000-square-meter open air hot spring, with more than 30 mini-ponds for children. The facility also includes a Vietnamese magnet bath, a Thai wooden bathroom and a Turkish fish spa. The resort already has 2,000 tables booked for holiday meals.
