Rural residents gain access to fitness facilities
People living in rural areas in Songjiang can now access gyms and fitness facilities easily and conveniently.
A resident surnamed Lin in Xiaokunshan said he no longer needs to drive a long way for a workout after a gym was opened in front of his neighborhood in June.
The gym is government-sponsored and offers a low price for residents. Only 5 yuan (83 US cents) is charged for each visit with no time limit and a one-year membership costs 365 yuan.
A worker at the gym said some 20 to 50 people come to work out daily, usually after 6:30pm, and most of them are local residents. Some 180 customers have bought membership cards, according to the worker.
Lin said he was very happy with the equipment and the shower at the gym. He and his wife have each bought a one-year membership.
According to the Songjiang Sports Bureau, 3.52 million yuan was put into public fitness facilities in 2013. Most were in villages and towns.
In the Guangxing neighborhood in Dongjing, a new fitness zone has become popular. A woman surnamed Xu who lives in the neighborhood said sitting in the sun and chit-chatting with neighbors used to be the only entertainment in winter. Now she can exercise outdoors within walking distance.
