Safe to eat? Try a food test

Songjiang residents concerned about the quality and safety of food they eat can now have products tested by the district Food and Drug Administration.

The agency is opening its doors to public testing the first Thursday of every month. It will assess the contents of sample products such as cooking oil, fish, meats and health tonics in a matter of minutes.

After a series of food-safety scandals in recent years, many residents worry that pesticide residue, formaldehyde and clenbuterol, a fat-burning chemical, may be present in their food.

It鈥檚 a relief to find that鈥檚 not usually the case. On February 5, one resident took some jellyfish to the testing center in Sheshan Town. An officer there soaked the sample in water for more than 10 minutes, then tested the liquid. It showed no signs of formaldehyde. The sample also tested negatively for pesticide residue.
