Safer food popular in overseas markets

Songjiang-grown agricultural products are a hit in overseas markets, according to the Songjiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
The annual export volume of perilla, a purple vegetable, exceeds US$1.5 million and Songjiang is one of the biggest perilla suppliers for the Japanese market.
Last year, Songjiang Cangqiao Crystal Pear, Shanghai鈥檚 first national protected geographical indication product, debuted in Hong Kong.
Huangpu River hairy crabs from Songjiang are in great demand in countries such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia.
Songjiang is also exporting processed salmon products to Australia with an annual amount of 12,000 tons gaining the foreign exchange earnings of US$300 million.
鈥楾hree-Same鈥 rule
With high-quality, high standard production and processing systems, together with a strict government inspection, the district鈥檚 agricultural products have won customer loyalty abroad, according to the local entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau.
A 鈥淭hree-Same鈥 rule has been set up. Export farm companies are required to use the same production chain to generate exports and domestic products of the same quality, so that goods sold at both domestic and international markets reach the same standard.
Farms are encouraged to adopt a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point, an internationally recognized and acceptable food safety guarantee system that monitors microbes, chemical and physical hazards.
Training lessons
The local entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau is also building an information and communication platform for the district鈥檚 agricultural manufacturers.
So far, it has held more than 20 training lessons for farming companies on how to cope with tech-related trading barriers in foreign countries, how to obtain foreign certificates more easily and how to gain fast customs clearance. It also publishes tech-related rules of target countries for farm companies to analyze.
Under the framework of Songjiang food export quality and safety demonstrating zone, we will keep on improving the farm goods monitoring system, updating the processing industry and cultivating more brand goods, the bureau said.
