School jam of parent pick-ups is eased

A more flexible timetable for primary school hours in Songjiang has been implemented to avoid the traffic jams created when parents descend on schools to pick their children up at the end of classes.

Beginning this March, all district primary schools are required to stagger their closing hours. First and second grade students leave school before 4pm. The rest of the students end classes in 10-minute intervals, grade by grade.

“In recent years, with the district’s increasing population, many schools were faced with great pressure,” said an official from the Songjiang Education Bureau. “Every afternoon after classes ended, school fronts were always packed with parents picking up their children. That caused heavy traffic congestion and posed a safety risk to the students.”

The new timetable means that most classes are ending a little earlier than usual. For parents unable to pick up their children on time, schools are required to maintain a “late class” presided over by one of the teachers. Students can do their homework or play games during these afterschool sessions. There are no tutorial lessons.

“The education bureau will carry out random checks to ensure that schools have properly implemented the new timetable,” the education official said.
