Sheshan Hill undergoes eco-facelift
THE upgrading of the Sheshan Hill Resort into a major eco-tourist destination will feature more than 30 kilometers of bicycle lanes, greenbelts covering 60 percent of the area, luxury hotels, sports facilities and blanket wifi coverage.
The parkland is already a favorite destination for day-trippers seeking open space, fresh air, entertainment and heritage sites.
In June, a three-year plan for renovating the resort area was released. It envisions a world-class tourist destination and national eco-park model, to be completed in three years.
When finished, the resort is expected to host more than 15 million visitors a year, double the current number. Park revenue is also expected to double to 6 billion yuan (US$978.6 million).
"The resort will extend Shanghai's tourism image, becoming sort of a lifestyle destination for urban dwellers," said Gao Guoxiang, Sheshan Town's deputy director. "Unlike Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) and Yellow Mountain (Anhui Province), where Shanghainese might travel occasionally, Sheshan Hill Resort is in the city's backyard and can be easily accessed more frequently."
The upgraded resort will also have a major tourist center, 20 visitor stations, expanded public toilets and enough parking to cope with large crowds on holidays. Wifi coverage will extend to all corners of the resort.
Facilities for backpackers
There will also be facilities for backpackers and tour groups, medical stations and information kiosks.
The resort encompasses six scenic zones highlighting historical sites, natural landscapes, folk arts, recreation and science.
"Visitors can choose whatever most interests them," Deputy Director Gao said. "If you like natural scenery, you can venture to the National Sheshan Hill Forest Park. If arts and culture are your thing, the Moon Lake Sculpture Park is the place to see. If you are visiting with a family, Happy Valley or the Chenshan Botanic Park would be good choices."
Shanghai Sheshan Hill Resort is one of the 12 nationally rated resorts in China and the only one in Shanghai. Core zone construction on 10.9 square kilometers is completed. When the whole project is finished, it will cover about 64 square kilometers.
Gao said the G50 and G1501 highways will be adding Sheshan Hill exits, which will be a boon to visitors arriving by car. The local government is negotiating with the municipal transport department to extend evening hours at Sheshan Hill Station on Metro line 9 to 11pm.
Five new parking lots will be constructed to accommodate up to 5,000 cars. More than 5,000 rental bikes also will be put into operation when the bike lanes are completed.
Among amenities to be built under the plan are the Songjiang Shimao Hotel, a luxury accommodation to be constructed alongside a water-filled quarry, and the Guangfulin Heritage Park, which will showcase the area's 5,000 years of civilization.
There will also be sports facilities capable of hosting golf tournaments and acrobatics competitions.
