Snow pears a tasty health food

IN late autumn, Chinese housewives typically make homemade snacks that are both yummy and healthy for the coming winter months.

Braised snow pear and rock sugar is on the must-cook list.

Light, sweet and easy to make, the dessert is said to ease coughs, dispel inner heat and nourish the lungs.

To prepare, wash a pear clean and peel it, removing the kernel. In a pot of boiled clean water, add some rock sugar until it melts.

Put the pear in the sugar water and braise for another 20 minutes. Then it’s ready to eat.

This snack can be eaten warm or frozen overnight for a cool treat.

In a traditional Chinese therapy to treat asthma and chronic sore throat, patients are advised to drink some braised pear and rock sugar every night before going to sleep for about a week.
