Stone sculptures celebrating the four seasons

SHANGHAI Yuehu Sculpture Park spans more than 30 hectares of water, grasslands and a man-made sandy beach. It is famous for more than 40 stone, porcelain and bronze sculptures created by masters from 10 countries.
The park’s Yuehu Lake is nestled among East Sheshan Hill, Xue Hill and Phoenix Hill. At the lake’s northern tip, an 800-meter tree-lined dike extends along the water bank.
At the main entrance, a huge sculpture entitled Flying to Eternity stands. It was designed by a Bulgarian artist. Alongside are two rows of canary pines.
A big sundial sits beside the sculpture, measuring the movement of the sun across the sky to log the passing of time. On each hour, a bell rings and music is played.
Yuehu Sculpture Park is divided into four gardens, celebrating the four seasons.
The spring zone features an opera stage built out on the water and a crystal palace. In the autumn zone, cobblestone pathways are strewn with golden tree leaves. It’s a popular site for wedding photos.
The summer zone features a sandy beach created with 5,000 tons of imported sand and flanked by trees reaching 12 meters high. A sightseeing deck built out from a giant old banyan tree, affords an ideal location for bird-watching.
It’s the perfect spot for a romantic stroll in the glittering summer moonlight.
The winter zone features a pavilion in the center of the lake. Red plum flowers planted along the waterway poke their cheery heads through the snow. The zone also features more than 20 modern sculptures carefully designed to blend in with the landscape.
One of the biggest highlights of the park is the opera stage. It is set off by music fountains and can accommodate an audience of up to 1,500 people.
The glass palace nearby features some grotesquely shaped stones. At night, the lights of the palace sparkle like crystal in the water.
The park also features a children’s zone with outdoor activities such as fishing, climbing and slam dunk, a pirate ship and a merry-go-around.
A coffee shop located by the lake in the autumn zone features ceiling-high glass walls, allowing visitors a panoramic view of rippling water and Sheshan Hill in the distance.
The Yue Shan Hai (Moon, Hill and Water) Restaurant, shaped like a yacht, specializes in French cuisine.
Barbecue facilities are available along park grasslands, and there’s a noodle bar for visitors who want to grab a quick snack.
