Tense time, then a sigh of relief
FOR Chen Yingguang, general manager at Shanghai Longdong Optoelectronics, the successful landing of China's Shenzhou-10 manned space mission last month came with a huge sigh of relief.
The rescue helicopter involved in the re-entry phase of the space module was equipped with an electro-optical pod manufactured by the Songjiang-based company.
When the re-entry module momentarily disappeared behind thick clouds and even an infrared detection unit lost its track, Chen held his breath.
"I was so nervous that my heart was beating wildly," he said. A minute later, the module re-appeared and the pod quickly targeted it before the successful landing.
It was the second time Longdong was involved in a space mission.
Compared with the pod manufactured for Shenzhou-9, the pixels this time were increased from five million to seven million, while volume and weight were reduced.
