The accent is on green in clean-up initiative
Songjiang has launched a campaign to rid the district of unsightly trash and provide a greener living environment.
In a Shanghai first, the district has initiated a “green account” for more than 700 households.
The program allows residents to receive credit points for correctly recycling their garbage.
The points can be exchanged for environmentally friendly gifts at community centers.
At the end of last year, 327 neighborhoods, 94 villages, 141 schools, 468 institutions and 60 food markets had joined the program.
Residents are required to discard trash between the hours of 7-8:30am or 6-7pm at neighborhood collection centers. There, they sort the trash with the help of on-site instructors and volunteers.
The district has purchased 26 biochemical processors to treat wet garbage from government canteens and food markets.
The towns of Sheshan, Jiuting and Maogang plan to set up 30-ton organic garbage-processing stations this year, and Yexie Town has already turned about 2,000 tons of wet garbage into organic fertilizers used on farmlands.
Trash recycle teams in 95 district neighborhoods are recycling plastic packaging and old clothes.
Daily volumes have reached six tons. The old clothes are cleaned and donated to charitable organizations.
